Q: What is a tabletop roleplaying game/TTRPG?
A:
TTRPGs are collaborative storytelling games where players describe their actions in a world that is narrated and adjudicated by the Gamemaster (GM). Players choose their actions based on the described circumstances & their player character's (PC) personality, the outcome of those actions is determined by the rules and guidelines of the chosen game system. These rules usually involve many different multi-sided die to add a aspect of chance and randomness to the collaborative story being told by the players & gamemaster.
Q: What does a gamemaster do?
A:
In short, a gamemaster acts the referee & the main storyteller. I guide the players, create the world, play the bad guys, set the tone, adjudicate the rules, create the combat encounters, draw the maps, paint the minis and most importantly: make a fool out of myself doing funny character voices.
Q: Do you run long term games?
A:
Yes, I run everything from one-shots (single session self-contained adventures) to 50+ session weekly games (also known as a campaign).
Q: Do you run free games?
A:
Yes! I run weekly free one shots every sunday afternoon. You can learn more here.
Q: Do you host games?
A:
No. I do not have the space or the money to host games. If you do not have a location to play the game in semi-private setting, I'm afraid we cannot have a game. I do wish to eventually create my own hosting space.
Q: I wanna have you GM for my group, but the system we want to play isn't listed. Will you still run the system for us?
A:
Maybe! I run these games at a custom rate depending on my experience and the type of game requested. I have a big list of games at the bottom of this FAQ that I'm interested in gamemastering and gaining experience in.
Q: What is your table like?
A:
I try to create a fun atmosphere that emphasizes story, combat, mystery & ridiculous adventure (depending on the game and players). Everyone is welcome at my table as long as they treat everyone else there with respect. The group gets to decide safety tools, tone, & limits, as I want to make sure everyone feels comfortable and has a good time.
Q: What are your table rules?
A:
I always give out a code of conduct of what is not acceptable at my table before the game if have new players. I do try to be understanding of mistakes (we all make them), if something is brought to my attention or I notice something untoward, I try to communicate with said person after the game before anything more serious.
That being said there are some things that are blatantly not acceptable and will result in the game stopping: Racism, Transphobia, Homophobia, Xenophobia, Right wing political support (MAGA, ICE), Sexual Harassment or Assault (in game or out of game), hateful remarks against anyone's identity or religion, etc. Essentially: Don't be a dick.
Q: What materials do players need to bring to the game?
A:
Generally the bare essentials are: a couple sheets of paper, a filled out character sheet (looked over by me), a writing utensil, & a good attitude. I provide dice, miniatures, maps, books, & everything else needed to play the game. Players are encouraged to bring whatever tools that help them play the game.
Q: None of the players know how to play the game/ havent played a TTRPG before. Is this a problem?
A:
No! While it does help to have a familiarity with a game system or roleplaying games in general, I tailor each session to the player's knowledge & experience with ttrpgs while also teaching the basic meachnics of the game system.
Q: Do You Do Birthdays?
A:
Yes! I'm not a birthday entertainer, but I can make and run a special birthday ttrpg session. I do need at least a week of lead time to make maps, minis, etc.
Q: I have a question not answered here/ how do I contact you?
