Howdy! My name is Laura Sullivan, I'm a young trans woman working as a professional gamemaster and based in the Bay Area of California. I've been gamemastering (GM'ing) tabletop roleplaying games for 6 years having run hundreds of sessions since high school. I had no experience with tabletop roleplaying games (TTRPG's) when I first started but upon learning what they were, I decided that I was going to GM for my friends as soon as possible.
I started off with the free basic rules for Fifth Edition Dungeons and Dragons, some graph paper, dice, a GM screen made out of folders & and proceeded to run a homebrew start-to-finish weekly campaign lasting 6 months. I have never stopped GM'ing since, from my own personal games, to running D&D Adventurers League events at conventions, running bi-weekly single session games for new players in pubs, & TTRPG fundraisers for a non-profit.
In 2024 I was hired as an afterschool teacher for Phoenix Vusion Group. A non-profit specializing in interactive, educational, afterschool programs that help 1st-8th grade students by getting them hands on with anything from gardening to tabletop roleplaying games. I found it to be the most rewarding and fun job I've ever had as it allowed me to express many different creative aspects while actually making a bit of a difference and helping kids have fun.
The job made such an impression on me because of the students and their ideas. They would suggest things that would change the game and story completely every single day, and it was a more complex puzzle to consistently engage them. They would talk about the game every lunch hour and coordinate to try to ruin my plans, or break the world and setting in some way. It's the most collaborative a game of D&D has ever felt to me. I found part of my passion there, I just wanted to do more all the time.
While I love teaching and still work with Phoenix Vusion Group from time to time, it is admittedly very financially insecure to work at an afterschool teaching non-profit as a freelancer. So I started this little passion project as a way to expand my repertoire and skills while also playing my bills.
