Q: Why do you run TTRPG games for children?
A :
Running tabletop roleplaying games for kids is the most rewarding job I've ever had. I actually began gamemastering professionally as an afterschool teacher, incorporating teamwork, history, myths, math challenges, riddles, & social conflicts that require public speaking and improvisation. It is the most fun I've ever had, as kids tend to have awesome imaginations that dwarf mine with their creativity.
Kids are a more complex puzzle as a gamemaster, too obviously educational and it's no longer a wonderous adventure in another world, it's a lesson by a strange adult who's not listening to them. You have to hide the medicine in the candy, while still honoring their choices completelty.
Q: What is a tabletop roleplaying game/TTRPG?
A:
TTRPGs are collaborative storytelling games where players describe their actions in a world that is narrated and adjudicated by the Gamemaster (GM). Players choose their actions based on the described circumstances & their player character's (PC) personality, the outcome of those actions is determined by the rules and guidelines of the chosen game system. These rules usually involve many different multi-sided die to add a aspect of chance and randomness to the collaborative story being told by the players & gamemaster.
Q: What are the benefits of tabletop roleplaying games?
A:
Teamwork - Players must work together and communicate to succeed. Using each of their character's unique abilities to solve problems and compensate for each other's weaknesses.
Conflict resolution - Players can solve nearly any conflict with whatever means they choose, whether that be combat, trickery, or diplomacy. Players are encouraged and sometimes required to find other, non-violent solutions to difficult problems.
Empathy in action - Players create and step into a character different from them, roleplaying that characters actions at the table. Roleplaying requires that they empathize and see the world from the their character's perspective and make choices in keeping with that character's worldview and previous actions.
Interactive, not passive - Players are not passively entertained, this is not a movie you park your kids in front of. They are constantly asking questions about the world and environment, putting together clues to solve riddles, describing their heroics, and using daring battle tactics in the heat of combat. Getting them engaged with just imagination, rulebooks, dice and some paper.
Roleplaying a good person in morally complex situations makes you better at being one in real life.
Q: What does a gamemaster do?
A:
In short, a gamemaster acts the referee & the main storyteller. I guide the players, create the world, play the bad guys, set the tone, adjudicate the rules, create the combat encounters, draw the maps, paint the minis and most importantly: make a fool out of myself doing funny character voices.
Q: Is a parent or legal guardian required to be at the game?
Yes. I require the legal adult who paid for the tabletop session to be present on the premises where the game is being played and that they be available during that time, this is for any group that is under 18. I am not a babysitter and I am not comfortable being left alone with anyone's children, specifcally for safety reasons. I provide entertainment and education, but in case of an emergency, there needs to be a parent or legal guardian present.
Q: Do you have an age restriction for players?
A:
Sort of, children must be at least 6 or older. Any younger and it more often than not becomes babysitting rather than playing and learning through tabletop roleplaying games.
Q: None of the players know how to play the game/ haven't played a TTRPG before. Is this a problem?
A:
No! While it does help to have a familiarity with a game system or roleplaying games in general, I tailor each session to the player's knowledge & experience with ttrpgs while also teaching the basic meachnics of the game system.
Q: What materials do players need to bring to the game?
A:
Nothing! I provide dice, miniatures, maps, books, sheets of paper, a filled out character sheet (provided by me), writing utensils & everything else needed to play the game.
Q: We want you to run for our kids and their friends but we would like you to do a background check. Can we arrange that?
A:
Yes. You pay for it, I'll clear it. I can also provide a resume and a character reference.
Q: I have a question not answered here/ how do I contact you?
A:
Email me! You can find the email linked at the bottom of every page on my website.
